Our home is a small, wet, seemingly-insignificant rock spinning around a massive ball of fire, suspended in endless, cold, dark space. Just think about that for a moment. It's both terrifying and thought-provoking. Why are we here?
It's tempting to just coast through life as though all of this is normal, without ever taking the time to consider that we might just be part of a story that is so much bigger than our own.
Andy Steiger provides an engaging, honest, and understandable approach to life's five biggest questions that will challenge your view of the world and how you live in it in his book "Thinking? Answering Life's Five Biggest Questions"
Andy speaks a lot on apologetics and it is not just people going around apologizing for what they believe in.
Apologetics is being ready and able to give a defense for the hope you have in Jesus Christ and to do it with gentleness and respect.
You see the disciples do that in the Bible.
Apologetics is a defense in explaining why we believe what we believe.
Why do you have hope in Jesus? Do you have good reason for the hope?
Facts help us to believe what we do.
Andy says he defines faith as trusting what you have good reason to believe is true.
When we trust something we have good reason for what we put our trust into. Same thing is true of our faith in Jesus Christ.
How important is it to have a good base in apologetics as a Christian?
There are a number of reasons why we should have a defense for our faith.
In the secular culture that we live in today Christians are constantly being challenged and questioned on a variety of subjects that in the past people didn't ask.
A lot of people don't believe that God exists.
Our kids are being challenged in their faith and they come home with questions.
We need to help our children answer those questions so they can develop a foundation for their faith.
As kids get older and go into post secondary their belief in God gets challenged more and more.
60-90% of college aged students are leaving the faith.
If we don't address this issue as a church, we will lose an entire generation.
When he started "Apologetics Canada" and came alongside churches to build the faith of our young people.
There are 5 big questions young people ask;
WHAT'S THE MEANING OF LIFE?
DOES GOD EXIST?
DO ALL RELIGIONS LEAD TO GOD?
WHY IS THERE EVIL?
IS THERE LIFE AFTER DEATH?
We need to be head and heart as Christians.
People need a place where they can discuss life's big questions. Where people can openly and honestly just raise questions and dialogue together.
We don't have an atmosphere in the church where young people feel open to ask their big questions.
We need to change that environment.
