It was 2 o'clock in the morning of November 17th. I had been awake for about an hour, which is unusual for me. Perhaps the distressing events of our increasingly troubled world in the late news were to blame. I went downstairs and turned on the television. HAPPY FEET was just beginning. I had never seen the 2006 movie which won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
"Mumble", the main character is not like the other Emperor penguins, because as his teacher reminds him, "A penguin without a heart song is hardly a penguin at all."
Mumble's uniqueness was in his feet! He had a dancing heart, and feet that expressed it's every beat! In the back of the class, Mumble was lost in his imaginings, wondering if there was any place where he could belong. A musical penguin colony that finds its mates through song, was an unfulfilling place for a penguin who couldn't carry a tune.
His lonely waddling soon provided a refreshing perspective amongst smaller penguins in a neighbouring community. They loved his flipping feet! At last—a place where a funky little fellow with an unusual gift could be himself and add value to those around him.
Mumble learns that "TRIUMPH starts with ‘TRY' and it ends with a great ‘UMPH'."
It was fun to see how Pharrell William's globally contagious hit song "HAPPY" got feet up and dancing in 2014. A friend of mine pushes back the darkness of depression with the help of "happy socks"— the wild, colorful variety that is always available at the Dollar Store.
Perhaps your outlook has gone cold on trying… or your umph is frozen.
May I make a hopefully heartwarming contribution at the outset of a frosty and somewhat foreboding 2015, with thanks to my Maker, and "Mumble"?
1) You are one-of-a-kind, uniquely and lovingly created by God with a divine purpose in mind.
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother's womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
2) Your talents and spiritual gifts are meant to enrich God's Family.
Here is 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 NLT:
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each
other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to
another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit
gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift
of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the
ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a
message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person
is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the
ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who
distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should
And 1 Peter 4:10
NLT says, God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of
spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
3) There is nothing random about your geography, or the people in your life (including the sandpaper ones!)
From one man he made every
nation of the human race to inhabit the entire earth, determining their set
times and the fixed limits of the places where they would live, - Acts 17:26
4) Every moment of your life, you are loved with an "everlasting love";
"…you are precious and honored in my sight… I love you." - Isaiah 43:4 NIV
Now here's the challenge: Are your happy feet ready?
Jesus came and died for you.
Why not go and live for Him.
