Is pessimism robbing you of life's fullness? Has a prolonged negative experience or a series of setbacks and disappointments caused you to only see the DOWNSIDE of every situation? Perhaps you're not even aware of your tendency to express hopelessness about an outcome, OR to belittle you or others. It's time to conquer this DEBILITATING attitude.
Someone once said, "Attitudes are nothing more than habits of thoughts, and habits can be acquired." The word of God provides practical advice for making a shift in your thinking. Phillipians: 4:8 encourages us to Fix our thoughts on what is: "TRUE, AND HONORABLE, AND RIGHT, AND PURE, AND LOVELY, AND ADMIRABLE--to Think about things that are EXCELLENT AND WORTHY OF PRAISE".
Overcoming pessimism requires more than a change IN THINKING; you must change your BEHAVIOR.
FOR STARTERS, you must limit your exposure to other pessimistic people. Being with a pessimist is like having a skunk at your picnic. It's a very unpleasant experience.
NEXT: Limit your exposure to negative external input (TV/OTHER media, movies, music).
YOU'LL ALSO WANT TO Memorize Scriptures that promise us the victory or a positive outcome in situations of life. Romans 8:28 is a good place to begin. It assures us that all things work together for GOOD to those who love GOD and are called according to HIS purpose.
FINALLY, PROACTIVELY LOOK for the good in every situation and always EXPRESS FAITH that it is there! I'm reminded of the words of Harry S. Truman, 33rd president of the United States of America: "The pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties"
