A few years ago, I made a bold move to leave the hectic and familiar world of Ontario. Where did I travel to you ask? To Saskatchewan, also known as the Land of Living Skies!
There is a reason for the joke about letting your dog run free and still being able to see him days later! It's a flat, simple land and one that I have come to appreciate and love.
Leading young people to impact other young people is one of my passions. In March 2017 I led a team on an outreach endeavor to a First Nation community in northern Quebec. While playing with children in the gym, my left Achilles tendon ruptured and I hit the ground in excruciating pain.
But the hardest part wasn't that the community was isolated and I'd have to wait 5 days before getting to a specialist.
It was the silent, slowed down season of waiting for my tendon to heal.
Those first few weeks were hard. My pace of life went from 100KMPH to 0.
"There was nothing else I could do except wait and trust God."
"In those slowed down, silent moments, God begin to do a deeper work inside me."
I invited Him into my fears - how will I pay my bills?
I invited Him into my shortcomings - unconfessed areas of pride and unforgiveness.
And I invited Him to fill me with His truth.
"God's character can be trusted."
Deuteronomy 31:6 says "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."
This verse was written to encourage the people of God. That no matter what their reality - insurmountable challenges - God wanted them to know they could trust Him to lead them to victory.
God provided for me.
He came through.
His character can be trusted.
When my tendon was healed, I moved to Saskatchewan to help facilitate a province wide Indigenous Youth Conference to combat suicide. What happened during that weekend was unprecedented! Youth shared on Sunday morning how they came to the conference planning to take their own lives, but realized how loved they were! Counselors said "what takes us 2 years to get to with the youth, took 2 days at this conference." Pastor Deloris Netmaker shared with her church that her God-fidence went through the roof!
God truly takes care of His children.
During the silent moments, I learned God is always preparing us for something greater. We can trust His character.
In reading the Bible, what do you know about God's character? What verse are you meditating on? Memorizing? Hiding in your heart? - this exercise has power, especially in times of crisis!
with me: "Father
God, reveal to us your character during this time. Let us know your
faithfulness, your heart, your Truth. Although the world has come to a halt, we
choose to believe you are preparing us for something far greater. We choose to
give you our fears, our worries, our anxieties, laying them at your feet Jesus.
TODAY, help us to see how you are moving in the midst of this current crisis.
We pray for frontline workers, truck drivers, grocery store employees, keep
them protected and free from all harm. Thank you for your peace and protection
over myself and my family. In your mighty name, Amen.
