Discouragement / LIFE HAPPENS

Today's encouragement comes from the book of Hebrews chapter 13 verse 5. "...Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."

It is God's promise to us to be with us no matter what. It is easy to become discouraged when we feel all alone, but strength comes in knowing that God will never leave us … no matter what life throws at us.

So what exactly does discouragement look like?

Discouragement is essentially the loss of confidence and enthusiasm. It is where we feel our strength is sapped by our circumstances.

Discouragement comes when life presents its difficulties. It can be considered a disease of the soul and it comes when we try to draw our identity from the world instead of from Christ.

Discouragement is often manifested in times where we are tired, fearful, upset, lonely, frustrated and have put our trust in "others" instead of God.

Discouragement makes us lose our confidence and opens the gateway to despair and depression. Essentially, we are deterred from hope when we allow discouragement to flood our being.

The opposite of discouragement is encouragement. It is to be stimulated towards a spirit of confidence. It changes our self-talk and allows us to grow and feel supported. Prayer, submission and reliance to God within the community of believers is the key to overcoming discouragement.

Both Stacy and Derrick have through their individual journeys felt discouragement creep into their lives as they faced those obstacles, hindrances and opposition from their circumstances.

Dear God, sometimes my "testing" season seems so long. Please give me courage to endure until the end. Help me not to bail! You said you would bless me for hanging in there - I will not give up on you or your promises. You are with me and will see me through this trial.
