Don't let the Jerks steal your Joy

Marriage and family life when done well takes a lot of time, thought, prayer and energy. In most cases, we do not have much left over to deal with other issues.

So to tempt us away from focusing on the family or marriage, distractions will occur. It could be a jerk at work or an extended family member who wants to make our lives miserable.

As they sinned against us, we let them to continue to sin against us mentally when we don't let go. So don't let a jerk of any kind take away your focus and energy from your family.

Author Gary Thomas reminds us that not everyone is going to be treating us well or right. While we cannot stop them from treating us badly, we can stop them from living in our minds. The best thing you can do is to say, "Lord, I give that up to you. They've really hurt me, but I'm going to trust that You are going to make that right. Help me to focus on loving my spouse, help me to focus on spending time with my kids."

In fact, let those distractions and temptations help you to re-focus on your family. Don't let your mental energy be wasted on helping unhealthy people to become healthy because they usually won't change. Unfortunately, they usually get pleasure out of being jerks. You are not going to be able to change them.

What you can impact is the level of intimacy with your spouse and kids. So focus on that instead and don't let the jerks steal your joy and your family.

Dear God, sometimes my "testing" season seems so long. Please give me courage to endure until the end. Help me not to bail! You said you would bless me for hanging in there - I will not give up on you or your promises. You are with me and will see me through this trial.
