If you know me at all, you'll be a little surprised that this blog was inspired by sports. It's not that I don't like sports - I am just am very unsporty. I've tried, I really have, but the scars sustained on the ski hills, basketball courts, lakes and ice rinks of my youth are too much. The emotional pains of being a klutz are strong. I do like to ride my bike, run and walk (in case you think I never go outside) which I can handle ok, unless I come across an unfortunately placed uneven crack in the sidewalk! My face has hit pavement many times. It's ok; I've come to terms with it. I don't always have to be picked first. Or ever.
I was watching a movie recently that really highlighted some great sports coaching. It was quiet inspiring and it reminded me about the influence that we can all have on one another.
You don't have to love sports to be a coach!
As I thought about coaching, it got me to thinking about our role with our children, and our students. I was watching the coaches and thinking - Hey - that is what we do too! We have the opportunity to be "coaches" and impact lives in ways greater than hockey or football. We are there to teach and guide incredible faith journeys. To be encouragers and cheerleaders, and when needed to offer correction and advice. It's such a great privilege. To influence a life for Jesus. To be part of spiritual discipleship - it's amazing!
The exciting thing is that we ALL can be influencers. Let's all be coaches! I know for my own children that I pray Godly people will take initiative and be part of their lives. People that love Jesus and that will connect with them and that will be spiritual coaches and examples to them. I need all the help I can get! Imagine if EACH one took the time to find ONE person, what a life changing experience that would be!
With no coaches, the team falls apart. That's not a great future for anyone. Let's work together and keep building a strong "team" by our influence that will create influencers.
