Mike was born and raised in a very strong and loving Christian home, he went to church every Sunday, but was never a follower of Jesus Christ. In his early twenties there was a time where he became under serious conviction. Mike had been following a different lifestyle and using drugs and one night in 1979 he took his bag of marijuana as he drove around Toronto, and poured the entire thing out the window of his car. He didn't want it anymore.
He drove to his sister's home and told her he wanted to give his life to Christ. Mike is one of 8 children - his brother is musical artist Danny Brooks who was also into drug use and God has done so much in their family.
His parents were supporters of 100 Huntley Street. In 1979 when he gave his life to Christ he started reading the Bible and praying. He came across a New Direction magazine (which Crossroads produced) and had an urge to read the Bible systematically and comprehensively and still continues to do that every day. God had plans for his life as he went off to Bible school where he met his wife. They have been on staff at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle as well as doing work in many places such as Kenya, Zambia, and Liberia.
It has not always been a smooth journey. It was their last day in Kenya before coming back to Canada to pastor Bethel Gospel Tabernacle. They were driving to Nairobi - about an hour and a half away and they inadvertently, innocently drove into a land dispute. Driver tried to find an alternative root and they were almost beyond the trouble and suddenly there were swarms of people coming towards their vehicle and a rock came through the vehicles window. Both of their daughters got hit in the head and needed 7 stitches. Their driver miraculously got them to safety as their vehicle could have been overturned very easily. Once they pulled to safety the driver told them to run. They ran to safety and they called out for medical attention. There was a doctor from Texas who gave them temporary first-aid and then a tour vehicle driving to Nairobi and there was room for them on board and they were driven right to the hospital. It was as if everything was in place for them. The presence of God was so evident.
They have endured many things but he is encouraged by the word of God,
"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33)
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8)
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit " (Romans 15:13)
"I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11)
For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: "The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me (Romans 15:3)
Mike shares that the application of scripture is for you today. It is amazing that the great God of Heaven so loved this world, that he gave his one and only begotten son Jesus Christ (John 3:16)
God is so interested in you and me, in His people - that He will fill us with Joy and Peace and Hope. Yes even in the perilous times we are living in.
He will keep you safe (Isaiah 8)
And we need to respond, "I will wait for the Lord, I will put my hope in Him"
