Jennifer Beckham, author of "Get Over Yourself" dreamed of becoming a Disney Princess since she was 7 years old! By the time she was 18 and working for Disney, she had experienced hardships in her family from mental illness to losing her father to cancer. With what felt like a hole in her heart, she adapted certain behaviors which led her down a destructive path and eventually led her to be repulsed by herself.
Wake Up Call:
God's dream was much greater for her life. She got to that place of fulfilling her dream and realized that's not where fulfillment was found. After spending a night on a cold bathroom floor, bulimic, looking for love in all the wrong places, and hating her life, Beckham decided she didn't want to be a princess anymore. Talking to her supervisor, telling him that she didn't feel like being a princess, he turned to her and said "Who ever asked you to feel? You were chosen to be a princess. Now go, wash your face, get a new attitude, go put on your clothes and go be Cinderella". It wasn't until 13 years later that God brought those words back and told her to walk that out.
- Whoever Asked You to Feel?
- You Were Chosen
- Wash Your Face
- Get a New Attitude
- Put on Your Clothes
- Go Be Cinderella
All behavior is rooted in belief. It's time to get over yourself, your pain, insecurities, they are keeping you from reaching out and sharing grace, they are keeping you from ministering to others.
Your purpose today, most of the time, is found in the area of your greatest pain - so if you do not go back and look at this junk, you are not using it for God's glory today.
Get real about what is keeping you from being all that God wants you to be and then you can deny yourself and lay that down, move on to everything he has planned for you.
This is definitely a process, God peeled back the layers for Jennifer. Jealousy in her marriage, manipulation, she was called to women's ministry and didn't even like women! God needed to bring her back to understand the offences she had stored up before she could be used for his glory.
Step Into The Shoes That Were Made Only For You:
Regardless of what you feel when you step into those shoes; you have a job to do. You've got to go out, be what those people need you to be in that moment, this is what you were chosen for.
Even though we are Christians and may not feel very saved in one moment, we need to put on Christ. We are told to put on righteousness, the mind of Christ, the armor of God, put on love - regardless of what we feel in one moment, we are called and chosen to make a difference in the world - to hold on to Christ with one hand and to reach out with another.
"It's okay to have emotions as long as emotions don't have you" - Jennifer Beckham
Either faith or emotions drive us and we have the choice to make. You can take it with every aspect of your life. If you make decisions based on what you feel, you will make wrong choices.
We think that because we are called and because Christ lives in our heart, that we are supposed to feel Him at all times and that we are supposed to feel anointed when we go up to someone to talk to them about the Lord. There are so many times we have to do things regardless of how we feel.
Everything in life is about a choice.
Regardless of what I feel right now, I choose to be the kind of person God says I should be in his word.
Jennifer: Going back to your past pains are hard to go back to but God goes back with you and will change your perspective on it. God wants to hold you and wants to say "That didn't happen because that is who you are or what you deserve, it's because we were all given a free will and that person chose to use their free will to hurt you, but let me show you a different perspective - you can use this for good". The greatest counsellor is someone who has been raped, the greatest minister to an alcoholic and bulimic is someone who has been one. If you just go back and if you trust the God who brought you through the first time, he will bring you back, give you a different perspective, teach you some things and then you can come out of that and find a purpose and fulfillment like nothing else.
It's a lie that it is too hard if we go to the past but God has given us each a destiny and this could very well be fulfilled by going to the hard places and finding freedom through that.
At the well with the Samaritan woman, the disciples told Jesus to eat, "Jesus said to them, My food (nourishment) is to do the will (pleasure) of Him Who sent Me and to accomplish and completely finish His work." John 4:34 (AMP) - doing the will of God is what will fulfill us. Setting other free, giving them hope, binding up peoples wounds, offering people hope in areas where they didn't have hope. Unless you can use that and do that today, you probably haven't gone back and found your purpose in your pain yet.
