The Amazing Power of Friendship, Fasting and Prayer

There is nothing like a good friend. Someone who can share with you joys and pain. Someone who won't judge you but be alongside you and pray as you journey through the next season of life together.

Suzanne Niles and Wendy Simpson Little have written "Fast Friends - The Amazing Power of Friendship, Fasting and Prayer". It is a practical guide that is meant to walk the reader through the importance of fasting and praying and how pressing into these 2 areas with a fast friend can change your life forever.

The ladies met 13 years ago through a brief work situation but sometimes you are just drawn to certain people and you know you have a connection through Christ. At the time Wendy's 2 year old daughter had been recently diagnosed with cerebral palsy and felt urgency to pray for her and she asked Suzanne to pray and fast with her.

As women especially having someone you can connect with and someone who can identify with you is so important.

Suzanne says it was life changing to have someone praying for her, her children, her husband, and the needs of her loved ones. To know she wasn't the only one bringing her children before the Lord was so amazing.

Wendy said the studied Matthew 6 it talks about fasting

"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Fasting"

They were compelled to add fasting to their prayer time. Found that fasting with their prayer time was very powerful.

They share their different life experiences going through this book. Wendy went through a scare where she thought she might be sick and Suzanne had gone through a similar experience and was able to help Wendy. To pray with her and encourage her.

They choose to fast from food. They felt called to give that up because they both love food. That dominated a lot of their time and thoughts. Wendy said she would turn to food instead of God. However we can fast from something that is taking away our time from God.

Suzanne says since they live in separate States they will share their requests by email, or text, or sometimes through a phone call. They pray and fast from Monday night after dinner to right before dinner on Tuesday night. For them it is fasting from solid food and just consuming liquids. There were days God would convict them to just do water. That worked for them but they encourage people to pray and ask God what type of fasting He wants them to do. The hunger pains were so strong for Suzanne and in order to not give into temptation she had to go to her knees and focus on the Lord. She ended up getting so much more than she gave up.

Wendy changed so much through this process. She had so much and it wasn't being used. God would help her keep her words in when her heart wasn't in the right place.

Suzanne says that when she was fasting her ability to hear the Lord was heightened. The Lord showed her the sin in her life when she would do things with the wrong motive. It was an eye opener. God called her to repent on those things and He loved on her through that and gave her freedom.

Through fasting God realigns the way you think so your motives are in line with His.

Dear God, sometimes my "testing" season seems so long. Please give me courage to endure until the end. Help me not to bail! You said you would bless me for hanging in there - I will not give up on you or your promises. You are with me and will see me through this trial.
