Award winning author Philip Yancey write with a journalist's eye for detail, irony and honest skepticism. He spent most of his adult years in Chicago, writing for a wide variety of magazines including Reader's Digest, Saturday Evening Post, National Wildlife and Christianity Today.
After penning his very first book, "Where is God when it Hurts?", Philip often gets invitation to various places around the world where people were facing or had faced a terrible ordeal. In 2012, the question of "Why?" came up as he spoke at three different places that had been through terrible ordeals, be it natural disasters, war or violence.
There is no simple answer that fits all the circumstance of why things happen. Yet, it is a question that both skeptics and Christians often ask in life.
Take heart, because God IS on the side of the people who suffer. Jesus had compassion for those who suffer. In the midst of tragedy, we might feel like God is against us. However, that is not true. Remember, one of God's names is "Emmanuel" which means, "God is with us". He is the one who will be holding us up through dark times. God doesn't necessarily take away the pain, but He does redeem the pain that we go through.
