"The truth is He has sent us THE ULTIMATE TEXT MESSAGE...a message of love and transformation...the Text of His Word!"
The popular communication method, text messaging, celebrated its 20th birthday recently. It was 20 years ago that an engineering student in the UK sent a text message from his computer to a friend's cell phone... and it worked! By 2010, text messaging became the most popular form of communication on the planet, surpassing both email and voice as the most used contact method. There are over five billion mobile phones worldwide sending over eight trillion text messages per year. It's interesting to note that 97% of text messages are opened, while only 22% of emails are opened.
What if we received a text message from God? I'm sure we'd open it immediately. The truth is He has sent us THE ULTIMATE TEXT MESSAGE. . . a message of love and transformation. . . the Text of His Word! Our Crossroads ministry emphasis during March, leading up to Easter, was on THE BIBLE. A high percentage of North American homes contain at least one Bible, but what percentage of people actually open God's Text Message? It would be wonderful if it were 97%, like those who open electronic text messages. The world would certainly be a better place if that were the case. But my hunch is that it's likely closer to 22%. like the email statistic. We at Crossroads want to do something about that! Our focus on TV, in print, and online last month was on the glorious treasures available to everyone through God's holy, loving, inspired, transforming written Word. The Message Bible by Eugene Peterson paraphrases the essence of Timothy's thoughts about the Bible this way...
"There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another - showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us." (2 Timothy 3:15-17)
Today, let's make a fresh commitment to opening, obeying, and sharing the Ultimate Text Message... God's Word!
