Today's encouragement comes from Psalm 3 verse 6 (NIV) where David says: "I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side." And in Psalm 34 verse 9 he says that we should instead; "Fear the Lord…for those who fear him lack nothing."
It is interesting as you study the word of God and try to understand more fully about the word fear; you quickly find that there are many references and incidents where people feared drastic and terrifying events happening to them. Yet, there are also a concentration of verses that actually advocates that we do fear, but we fear God not the world. It is an interesting twist.
So, fear in the bible is described in a variety of ways, from being afraid of our circumstances to being terrified.
At the same time we discover that the fear of God lies at the heart of successful living.
It is what separates us from the world.
It is a fear, that actually frees us and gives us peace.
When we fear the world with its situations and complexities,
we then lack peace and security, which is the opposite of fearing God.
Thus in the bible we see two sides of fear- One where fear produces reverence and obedience and the other anticipate displeasure.
We close with our theme passage for Life Happens from Joshua 1:9 and encourage you to-
"Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid;
Do not be discouraged…Why?...
For the Lord your God--
Will be with you wherever you go."
